Whenyoung
Fresh from the release of their album “Reasons to Dream”, the Irish rockers on their sound, playing live, and the best Irish person ever. (Hint: it’s not Sinead O’Connor. Ok, maybe it is Sinead O’Connor.)
"What’s your earliest memory of music?
[Drew] Probably my dad blasting The Cars in the car! Niall’s would be Spice Girls related, and Aoife picked up a tin whistle when she could just about walk.
Who was your favourite band or artist growing up?
There were definite moments when we started to grow and appreciate music, that first time you hear something and your life changes. For Niall probably The Libertines, Aoife maybe Joni Mitchell and Drew The Strokes.
How did you guys get together?
We met in our hometown of Limerick through mutual friends and a love of music.
How did you choose the name Whenyoung?
We took it from one of our favourite songs, When We Were Young by an Irish band called Whipping Boy. We shortened it, made it one word and eventually decided to stick with it."
What’s your favourite of your lyrics?
“They’re the salt of the earth but not sure what their worth is.” It’s from our song “The Others” written after the Grenfell disaster and is about those who are marginalised in society and disregarded.
What’s the best live gig you’ve ever done?
Pur headline London show at Electrowerkz in February felt really special.
Who is one band/musician killing it right now?
I’m [Drew] obsessed with the new The Japanese House album at the moment! We all love the music Nilufer Yanya has been making too. There are lots of Irish bands doing very well right now which is great to see too.
Best Irish person ever?
Grace O’Malley the Pirate Queen of Connacht, one of Ireland’s foremost heroines! Well, her or Sinead O’Connor.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice is often the most dull and practical like laundry folding techniques.
What’s your goal for one year from now?
For “Reasons To Dream” to be a successful album and have toured it around the world!
